I "built" my iMac from parts of 2 old iMacs (I maintain mine & my sister's) and she has had occasion to get (paid) help from a private store specializing in Mac products. I only use the internet when " I" want it !! Probably the worst thing about El Capitan was the complete change in "SPOTLIGHT" to an internet resource, rather than a search engine for my computer and it's two remote hard drives - I could not find much of anything !! Like you, cost is not an issue.Ībout 2 months ago, having asked basically the same questions, I - FOOLISHLY - "upgraded" my 2007 iMac to El Capitan.Įl Capitan kept trying to force things on me that I didn't want, would not allow me to keep things where I wanted them on my desktop and made just downloading images stored on my camera's SD card a real "adventure" rather than the simple and intuitive process I'd used on 10.6.8. An iPad has replaced all but a low percent of my computer use and I've been underwhelmed by Apple's new machines for quite some time. I've gone from a new computer each year to no new purchases for quite a while. If it looks like my boxes are old and newer hardware might be called for. If you do it, I'd recommend hanging on to a clone of 10.6 for a while and doing a fresh install. For that reason alone I stick with it but there is a clone of 10.6 for each machine's OS still kept updated for the potential day I throw in the towel and rollback. I run 10.8 because I shoot with a Fuji XTrans camera and wanted to go back to Aperture as I was not getting along with Lightroom's library. A 2.53 mini has been left on 10.6 even though I prefer the same OS on all machines in the house. Benefits are limited to being able to run Aperture 3.4.4/5 and Mail runs better and Aperture 3.4.4/5. While I should do a fresh install, there are other mitigating reason why I still consider a rollback: some of my old utilities don't run on 10.8 and there are no new releases, Safari runs very slow, the Finder is slower. It took me two weeks to get everything running correctly.

The upgrade on the iMac was the worst install I've ever done.

The fresh install on the Air went well and it runs well. I do use 10.8 on a 2.8 iMac and a 2.13 Air.

I've rolled back 3 friends computers from 10.7 or. I also maintain about a dozen Mac's for family and friends.
